Even if you have been hiding under a proverbial rock, you have no doubt heard of the horror stories involving people who have been caught up in the tyrannical rule under the organisation known as the Islamic State. We hear so much about the IS that we can perhaps become a little complacent and jaded at yet another story of the atrocities committed by
the militant group. But what about the innocent people whose lives a held hostage by them?
Last month, Amnesty International released a report compiled over 2014, detailing the conditions which innocent people, particularly women and young girls, find themselves in. The report is called Escape From Hell: Torture and Sexual Slavery in Islamic State Captivity in Iraq . For the sake of context, this is a part the introduction to the report, which explains the situation;
“As they swept through large parts of northern Iraq, fighters with the armed group calling itself “Islamic State” (IS) systematically targeted members of non-Arab and non-Sunni Muslim communities, as well as Sunni Muslims who oppose them. But even within the context of its persecution of minority groups and Shi’a Muslims, the IS has singled out the Yezidi minority, notably its women and children, for particularly brutal treatment”.
In offering findings that would no doubt appal the average person, the report continued. “Many have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment, including rape and other forms of sexual violence, and have likewise been pressured into converting to Islam,” it read.
Amnesty International says that only a few hundred have managed to escape. Some of the women and girls who escaped were interviewed only after it was confirmed that their identities were not revealed. They told horrible stories including sex slavery and even young girls who took their own lives as a better alternative to being forced to marry their
captors or being subjected to other abuse.
