The rise and rise of GH comedy acts ; DKB, Kalybos, Funny Face , Afia Schwarzenegger and Bismark the Joke

Wack. A perfect description of Ghanaian stand-up comedy
in just some few years past. Bar the likes of KSM in recent
times, and a couple from erstwhile Concert Party in the
90’s, the local comedians always performed under the
shadows of their Nigerian counterparts.
In many instances, organisers of comedy shadows have to
fly down comedians from Nigeria to come entertain
Ghanaians. This wasn’t any bias as clearly this comedians
always made sure they deliver to their maximum
capability.
Hardly is there any Nigerian comedian who has not
performed in Ghana. They came in their troves, entertained
us, pocketing huge sums in the process. Much as we had
our KSM, more of a satirist if you ask me, even if we can
just come out with one, just a single comedian to take on
these Nigerians, we would just manage it like that.
I quite remember somewhere in the mid-2000s when
Charterhouse introduced Stars of the Future music reality
show, there was comedy bit attached. From there came in
the likes of David Oscar, Forster Romanus among others.
That was a long and hard journey though the project fell
on rocks shortly before take off. But a clearly it
emphasized on a need that needed to be met. Fast
forward to some ten years later, you would be amazed to
see how far our comedy industry has come, though the
journey has only begun to take shape.
